Remove unroadworthy vehicles from our roads

IT IS NO rocket science that unroadworthy vehicles — especially when it comes to faulty steering systems or brakes — are the cause of numerous fatal accidents.

Unroadworthy vehicles remain death traps, and when such vehicles are taxis and buses that transport large numbers of passengers, the danger is exacerbated.

Last Tuesday morning, a bus crashed through safety barriers before veering off a bridge in Maidstone, Tongaat. Three passengers lost their lives and 15 were injured. The tragedy is reported to have stemmed from alleged brake failure.

In March, eleven people died and 18 others were injured after the bus they were travelling in went down a bank near Hibberdene on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast. In January 17 people were killed at Van Reenen’s Pass after the driver of a minibus taxi apparently lost control of the vehicle.
