Recalling retired detectives a stopgap - not a solution

THE decision to bring 60 retired detectives back into the police force to ease the national shortage of more than 2 300 crime investigation officers must be welcomed.

However, this must only be a temporary measure pending long-term solutions. The return of retired detectives is a welcome reinforcement, but it must be the beginning of a broader reform, not the end.
Experience may solve today's crisis, but only structural change will secure tomorrow's justice.
The shortage of detectives leaves communities vulnerable and justice delayed. Thus reenlisting the retired detectives represents both a pragmatic intervention and a symbolic gesture.
It is a reminder that experience remains one of the most valuable assets in policing, but also a warning that temporary measures cannot substitute for long term reform.
