THERE is a particular alchemy to a good heist film. All you need is charm, momentum, surprise and just enough sleight of hand to make the implausible feel inevitable.
Jewel Thief: The Heist Begins wants desperately to play in that league. It does, however, have the components. An ageing anti-hero, a blood drenched antagonist with a fetish for fine art and an emotionally blackmailed mission. Yet, it fumbles the recipe so completely, it had me wondering if the script was actually just the first draft.
