Upset families visit cemetery after vandalism

Forty graves were decimated at the Barrhead cemetery on Sunday morning when a number of gravestones and memorials were knocked to the ground or smashed.

A crucifix, a local landmark, was also burned.

A 39-year-old man appeared at Paisley Sheriff Court on Monday charged with wilful fire-raising and malicious damage. He made no plea. He was remanded in custody for further examination.

The Barrhead community meanwhile is rallying round the families affected, with the graveyard awash with bereft families and well wishers in recent days.

An online fundraising page has since been launched and has raised in excess of £1,500 in just two days.
