FIRST WIN OF SEASON WAS WELL EARNED FOR SAINTS

However, the Buddies were forced to survive an injury-time salvo at Station Park from battling part-timers Forfar who netted through Kieran Inglis.

Success, though, was just what the doctor ordered for Saints after they kicked off their Group D campaign with a goalless draw at Arbroath before losing on penalties.

The Buddies are a point clear at the top of the section ahead of Saturday’s visit of League Two Annan Athletic who were thumped 6-1 by Championship Ayr United last night.

Following that false start 16 miles away at Gayfield on Saturday, Saints needed victory from their second trip to Angus in four days.

Boss Stephen Robinson made four changes to his starting lineup with midfielder Oisin Smyth coming in for suspended skipper Mark O'Hara.

Alex Iacovitti, Conor McMenamin and Jonah Ayunga were also handed starts as Scott Tanser, James Scott and Mandron dropped to the bench.

League Two Loons actually topped the group ahead of kickoff courtesy of a bonus point penalty shootout win over Annan Athletic at the weekend.
