Orissa POST

As Odisha aligns with the global call to beat plastic pollution, it sets a strong government action, civil society, and individual responsibility can come together to effect change. The road ahead may be challenging, but with continued effort, awareness, and a cleaner and more sustainable future is well within reach

As countries across the globe are gearing up to observe World Environment Day June 5 with the United Nations' theme "Beat Plastic Pollution", Odisha has stepped up its battle against one of the most pressing environmental issues of our time—plastic waste.

From stringent enforcement to innovative community-driven initiatives, the state is adopting a comprehensive approach to reduce its plastic footprint.

Plastic pollution, particularly from single-use items, has become a global crisis. It affects marine ecosystems, wildlife, and even human health.

Underscoring the gravity of the issue, environmentalist JK Panigrahi of Orissa Environmental Society (OES) said, "Every year, over 430 million tonnes of plastic are produced globally, and 13-17 million tonnes end up in the oceans. Plastics don't biodegrade. They break down into microplastics that enter our food chain and harm health."
