GOVTS MUST WORK TOGETHER TO DELIVER WELFARE SCHEMES: BIRLA

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla Saturday stressed that both the Centre and state governments must work in close coordination to ensure that welfare schemes effectively reach the last mile, particularly the Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs).

Addressing the valedictory session of the two-day 'National Conference of Chairpersons of Committees of Parliament and State Legislatures on the Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes' here, Birla said the true benefits of development can be delivered only through such joint efforts.

He underlined the urgent need for every state Assembly to constitute dedicated committees on the welfare of SCs and STs so that sustained attention can be given to issues concerning these communities.

While Parliament already has such committees monitoring welfare measures, Birla observed that their absence in some states limits effective oversight at the grassroots level.
