LOWDOWN ON PREMIER LEAGUE CLUBS' CHANCES
-
The new Premier League season kicks off tonight when champions Liverpool host Bournemouth (8pm). Here, the PA news agency takes a look at each team's chances for the 2025-26 campaign.
Arsenal
Having finished as runners-up for three straight seasons - ending the last campaign 10 points off the pace - the Gunners' summer recruitment drive has lifted hopes Mikel Arteta's squad can last the distance in the title race this time around. The arrival of Sweden forward Viktor Gyokeres in a £55m deal from Sporting Lisbon could just prove the missing link.
Aston Villa
After battling their way into the revamped Champions League - securing a memorable home win over Bayern Munich in the expanded group stage - Villa eventually felt the impact of fighting on two fronts. Unai Emery's side just missed out on a return to Europe's top-tier in a scrap which went right to the final day. The goals of England forward Ollie Watkins will again prove key.
Bournemouth
Andoni Iraola's well-drilled side continued to punch above their weight last season - with the Vitality Stadium anything but a happy hunting ground for the leading teams. Justin Kluivert stepped up to become the Cherries' main goal threat - including a Premier League hat-trick from the penalty spot - and keeping the supply line to the Dutchman will again prove key to further progress.
Brentford
It will be a season of change for the Bees after head coach Thomas Frank left for Tottenham Hotspur, with Keith Andrews stepping into the dugout while former captain Christian Norgaard and Bryan Mbeumo both completed moves away. Andrews will hope the likes of Yoane Wissa who himself has attracted transfer interest - can help fill the void as his new-look side aim to push back up into the top half.
