HONOUR IS LONG OVERDUE SAY FANS OF FIGURE SKATING LEGENDS

- By LYNETTE PINCHESS

NOTTINGHAM legends Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean ended their golden career on a high after 50 years of skating together but fans are calling a final fitting tribute.

The ice dance duo bowed out in style with a “perfect” performance at the Motorpoint Arena at the weekend.

Hundreds of thousands have been wowed by the dazzling and nostalgic Our Last Dance shows across the UK and Australia since the tour began in April. Now their professional partnership is over fans are calling for Jayne and Chris to be knighted for their dedication and sporting achievement - with many saying it’s long overdue.

No British ice skater has been knighted. Torvill and Dean were awarded the MBE in 1991 and OBE in 2000. Back in 2017 the Post reported on calls for Chris to be made a Sir and Jayne a Dame. Nottingham South MP Lilian Greenwood put in an application to the Cabinet Office, which decides each year who to recommend for the honour, but was unsuccessful.
