People's Hall 'at risk' ... but campaigners say it's a good thing

A HISTORIC Nottingham building has been deemed to be at risk and in need of urgent repairs - but a group of volunteers working to bring it back to life argue it's a positive step.

- By GEORGE PALMER-SOADY

The Grade II-listed People's Hall in Hockley has previously been the home of an 18th-century entrepreneur, a venue for snooker competitions and a space for working-class people to learn skills.

However, in recent years, the Heathcote Street building has become derelict and disused. Currently, buckets are scattered across the once-grand lecture halls to collect rain that drips through the ceilings, while the wallpaper is peeling off.

There's not even any hot water in the building, with the People's Hall recently being included on a list of at-risk buildings published by Historic England.

The register details some of England's most impressive and historically important buildings that are in need of urgent repairs to ensure they can continue to thrive for years to come.
