HE WAS EXPOSED TO FIBRES AS RAIL ELECTRICIAN
A MAN who once worked on restoring Orient Express train carriages died after contracting cancer from asbestos exposure.
Malcolm Gelsthorpe, from Mansfield, died of epithelioid malignant mesothelioma, a type of cancer which develops in the lining of the lungs and is linked to asbestos exposure.
Mr Gelsthorpe was diagnosed with the incurable condition in January last year and received chemotherapy but his general condition "continued to deteriorate".
He died aged 68 on March 7 at John Eastwood Hospice in Suttonin-Ashfield.
An inquest was concluded into his death at Nottingham Coroner's Court yesterday after a referral was made to the coroner due to medical examiners believing the diagnosis could have been a result of Mr Gelsthorpe's employment. Mr Gelsthorpe used to work on railways as an electrician between 1979-1980 to 2022-2023 and had reported being exposed to asbestos in his job.
