Minister hints on pension rise for ex-mine workers

FORMER Nottinghamshire miners have been offered a strong hint on when they could see their pensions go up as a government minister says many still face an "injustice".

Those campaigning for the increase have previously said getting an uplift soon is "critical" as more than six members of one pension scheme are dying every day.

The government minister responsible for miners' pensions says her team have felt the "pressure" to deliver a pensions boost and agrees that the situation needs "fixing". The majority of those who worked in the pits were members of the Mineworkers' Pension Scheme (MPS) and the government announced changes for that scheme in late 2024, which has seen members getting an average uplift of £29 a week.
