THE government will not wait for Nottingham City Council to become financially stable before carrying out a major shake-up which could see it expand into neighbouring areas.

- By OLIVER PRIDMORE

A new council covering Nottingham and surrounding boroughs like Gedling and Broxtowe is one of several options being considered under the biggest change to local government in 50 years.

Concerns have been raised by some neighbouring areas about the finances they would inherit if they were to end up merging with the city in a new council. The government has confirmed it has received concerns about the "indebtedness among councils".
