THE final days of Adolf Hitler were marked by chaos, paranoia and fear. By April 1945, the war was undeniably lost with a once-mighty German army decimated.

Under relentless bombardment as Soviet forces closed in on what was left of the Third Reich, its leader was confined to the Führerbunker beneath the city.

Yet Hitler refused to accept defeat. The Battle of Berlin would be the last of the war in Europe and on 21 April, Hitler ordered a senseless counterattack on the Soviets, asking the impossible of units already reduced to shadows of their former strength.
