'E-scooter riders should be made to wear helmets, or more tragedies may follow'

MORE e-scooter riders could die if no protections are in place, according to a coroner after a dad died in a collision days before his wedding.

Scott Catton was riding along Ridgeway in Top Valley on June 5, 2025, when he hit a car door that had opened in front of him, causing him to spin and fall onto the road surface despite his evasive manoeuvres.

The 53-year-old, who was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision, suffered a serious head injury and died two days later in the Queens Medical Centre on June 7.

An inquest, which concluded in March this year, heard that Mr Catton was double the drink-driving limit and had cocaine in his system - but it was not clear to the coroner whether this had any impact on his ability to avoid the accident.
