Driver thought man lying in road was a 'Hallowe'en prank'

In a statement, Gina Day said her husband Steve “was one of the good guys” after a retrial jury found his killer Karl Twyford guilty of causing his death by careless driving.

The 67-year-old victim was run over as he lay in the road in Sutton Bonington where he lived.

The 29-year-old defendant drove off before handing himself in the day after but claimed he thought it “was a Hallowe'en prank”.

Judge Michael Auty KC granted Twyford bail until he sentences him next month.

Mrs Day said: “Steve was a very keen motorcyclist and travelled all over the world for his work and on his motorbike.

“He loved life and lived it to the full doing things he loved such as walking, skiing and kayaking.

“Steve was one of the good guys. He was loved so much by all of his family and friends and didn’t deserve to die in the way he did. Our family will never be the same again and life is much darker without Steve in our lives.
