Look beyond a sign that says ‘pets allowed’; a truly pet-friendly stay caters to the comfort of both animal and human
A few days ago, I took my dog, Musafir, on a weekend getaway to Bhandardara, a quiet lakeside town a few hours from Mumbai. It was the perfect break from city noise, with fresh air and green slopes for him to explore.
Planning a holiday with a pet involves more than finding a place that says “pets allowed.” A truly pet-friendly stay caters to both the animal's comfort and safety as well as the owner's convenience.
The first factor to consider is space. A good staycation spot should offer safe, open areas where your pet can walk and play without restraint. Wide lawns, fenced gardens and shaded paths are ideal. Before booking, check guest photos online to see if these spaces really exist. Properties that restrict pets to one small corner or insist they remain leashed at all times rarely make for a relaxing stay. For senior dogs or large breeds, ground-floor cottages or rooms with easy access to the outdoors are more practical.
