Facing water crisis, Delhi seeks SC direction to Haryana to release water

The Delhi government has approached the Supreme Court, seeking an urgent directive for the State of Haryana to release surplus water provided by Himachal Pradesh to Delhi via the Wazirabad Barrage.

This move aims to address the escalating water and sanitation crisis in the national capital.

“Access to water is one of the basic human rights of an individual. Not only is water essential for sustenance, but access to water also forms an essential component of the guarantee of dignity and a quality of life guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution,” the Delhi government asserted in its petition. The government highlighted the severe water shortage, worsened by record temperatures reaching 52.9 degrees Celsius.
