Peace I leave with you

Just as Jesus is about to close his discourse at the Last Supper, he leaves the best gift to his beloved disciples, his gift of peace.

He knows the troubles that he and his followers will be up to as soon as they leave the Upper Room and face the hatred and antagonism of the Jews. But he is also certain of the victory that his Father has promised him, hence he can say: “The ruler of the world is coming. He has no power over me.”

What is the source of this peace and serenity of Jesus? He reveals it as he says, “The world must know that I love the Father and that I do just as the Father has commanded me.” The peace that Jesus gives rests on his consciousness of his constant and steady communion with the Father. Even at the moment of his suffering and death, he knows that everything is done out of love for the Father and for us.
