RUBEN Amorim joked that Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe offered him a new contract when he visited the club's training complex yesterday.

Amorim held a routine meeting with Ratcliffe at Carrington ahead of the Premier League visit of Chelsea today with United 14th in the Premier League table after two defeats from their first four league games.

Ratcliffe has been defensive of Amorim's record at United, claiming in March that the Portuguese was doing “a great job”. Amorim has won only eight of his 31 Premier League games in charge.

Amorim was reassured by Ratcliffe that his position is still secure. Amorim is under contract at United until the summer of 2027.

The United head coach also discussed the state of play at the club with chief executive Omar Berrada and technical director Jason Wilcox. Amorim opined that United “are playing well until the boxes”.

“New contract, he was offering me a new contract!” Amorim joked. “No, it's normal things just to show the support, explaining that it's a long project.
