Sharp rise in green bin subs charges

SUBSCRIPTIONS for the unpopular green bin emptying charge have opened for next year and the cost has increased by 17 per cent.

Residents can sign up to have their garden waste emptied for £69, a charge that was introduced by Cheshire East Council for 2024 amid many complaints.

For 2025 the cost of the subscription was £59, the year before it was £56 and, despite inflation currently standing at around 3.8 per cent, the council has defended the steep price hike.

Councillor David Jefferay, chair of the environment and communities committee, said: “Last year, more than 100,000 residents subscribed to our garden waste recycling scheme - an increase on the first year of the service.
