Weekly general waste collection could be ended

WEEKLY general waste collections in Leicester could be scrapped.
The city council said a consultation on the future of the service revealed that “at least half” of residents put their black bins out to be emptied each week when less than three-quarters full.
The bins will have less going into them once separate collections for food waste begin next year in line with government rules.
At that point, maintaining a weekly pick-up for general waste would be “inefficient”, a council document said.
Reducing the frequency of collections would also reduce the amount going into black bins and increase recycling - and would also save the authority money.
A public consultation into waste and recycling habits was conducted ahead of the contract between Biffa and the council coming to an end in May 2028.
