POLITICIANS AND FAITH GROUP LEADERS STRESS NEED FOR JUSTICE AFTER ATTACK ON SIKH WOMAN

- By STAFF REPORTER

THOUSANDS of people have taken part in an event calling for justice following the suspected racially motivated rape of a Sikh woman.

Police have said their investigation continues at pace following an attack on a woman in her 20s in the Tame Road area of Oldbury, in the West Midlands, shortly before 8.30am on September 9.

The Indian Workers Association (Great Britain), in partnership with Kohinoor Radio 97.3 FM, held a public meeting on Sunday at the Conference Hall, in St Saviours Road, Leicester.

The organisers said the hall was filled to capacity, while thousands more followed on the radio station.

Speakers included Preet Kaur Gill MP, chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Sikhs, who stressed the urgent need for justice and protection for Sikh women and minority communities.

Leicester South MP Shockat Adam condemned the attack as a crime against humanity and pledged political support, while Liam-James Dean, office manager for Leicester East MP Shivani Raja, expressed cross-party solidarity with the Sikh community.

Contributions were also made by councillors, former city MP Claudia Webbe and trade unionists.
