Amy's story inspires city theatre group's play touring schools

|December 10, 2025
A PROFOUNDLY disabled woman’s first book, endorsed by Last of Us actor Bella Ramsey, has inspired a touring theatre show for learning disabled audiences.
TALENTS: Amy Mayo with her book and Bamboozle Theatre Company members. Below, Amy with the show's actors and, right, actor Bella Ramsey
Amy Mayo, 22, has cerebral palsy and was described in 2004 as possibly the most profoundly disabled child in the country at the time.
She wrote her first book, Eye of the Storm, to raise money for Leicester charity Bamboozle Theatre Company’s 30th year celebrations in 2024 - Amy has been attending Bamboozle events with her family for 17 years.
Eye of the Storm is a short story that focuses on a journey into the unknown for Captain Amy and her companions and is full of determination, heartache, and resilience. Amy wrote it painstakingly, one word at a time, alongside her teacher, using her spelling book and EyeCommander software.
Amy said: “I am excited, proud and grateful to have seen my book in print.”
Bamboozle’s show, Airship, has taken Eye of the Storm as its initial inspiration and will be touring specials schools and theatres this month and next.
Airship will be an immersive, sensory show for children and young people who may be described as having profound and multiple learning disabilities like Amy herself.
It has been co-produced by the city’s Curve.
