When potholes become the topic of national conversation

I often thank my lucky stars for having grown up in the 1980s, a simpler time when kids were encouraged to roam the streets and the words facetime and download hadn’t been invented.

My memories of that decade are overwhelmingly positive, although it did give us the worst haircuts, yuppies, shoulder pads and terrible small talk. Maybe the existence of just four tv channels or the lack of a world wide web was to blame but all I can remember about social gatherings 40 years was middle aged blokes in faded denim debating the quickest way to get from South Manchester to the Home Counties and whether or not they should avoid the Cotswolds.
