Jennifer Cartwright on Simon Cowell: The Next Act

Has Simon Cowell: The Next Act given us the next big boyband?

They stole hearts, sold out stadiums, broke records and became the most successful X Factor act ever - despite never actually winning the show.

I am, of course, talking about One Direction, the British boyband that took the world by storm in 2010. Since the group broke up, there's been a gap in the market for something new to take their place. Simon Cowell: The Next Act tries to discover what this is.

The show begins as a documentary focused on the lavish lifestyle music mogul Simon Cowell leads alongside partner Lauren Silverman, son Eric, and an entourage of staff. Throughout the day and into the night, Simon is distracted by nostalgia for a time where boybands ruled the world. Optimistic that he can bring this era back, he decides to launch a nationwide hunt for the next big boyband.
