Game, set, match and I've still got no idea what just happened

've been watching Wimbledon. The tennis, not the Wombles, although to be fair the latter makes more sense to me than the former.
Recycling is a great idea whilst the scoring system in tennis confuses me every time.
Imagine being the first opponent facing the inventor of the game.
He explains the rules to you and you find yourself losing, what you think is the first point.
Turns out it's worse than that, it's 15 points! "But you only got the ball past me once" you'd cry, "Well, sorry, but it's my game and I get 15 for that".
It then happens again. "30"! "What? This is ridiculous, you cant keep adding 15 points every time".
After a moment of contemplation he replies "OK. I understand your frustration, I promise not to add 15 points every time". You play on, and lose again... "40"! "What?!!" ... "Well, I didn’t add 15 did I?".
It's so complicated, and they know it is.
