CARRAGHER IS BAFFLED BY TAA'S MOOTED FREEBIE MOVE TO MADRID, BUT SHEARER SAYS FULL-BACK SHOULD GET A HERO'S SEND-OFF
JAMIE CARRAGHER does not understand why local hero Trent Alexander-Arnold wants to leave Liverpool when he could win more trophies at Anfield.
The Kop right-back is set to join Real Madrid this summer, with Liverpool receiving no transfer fee because TAA has been allowed to run down his contract.
Liverpool supporters have reacted with fury online over Alexander-Arnold walking away for nothing when a mega-money transfer could have helped the Merseyside club.
But Carragher, who won the Champions League in 2005 with the Reds, is more puzzled why the player is leaving when Arne Slot's side are competing for top honours.
He believes Alexander-Arnold should want to lead Liverpool in surpassing Manchester United's 20 league titles and narrowing the gap on Real Madrid in Europe.
"It seems like there's not one thing people are unhappy with, people are angry for three or four different things," Carragher told the Stick to Football podcast. "Is it the fact he's leaving on a free or is it that he should have come out and told the club earlier? But from where I'm sitting, as a local player and a fan, Liverpool are in a position where they're competing for the league title and a European Cup every year.
"He's a Liverpool fan and he's a local player so I'm disappointed that he doesn't think that this is it.
"If I was in his position, I'd be thinking that we could go level with Manchester United in league trophies, I've got another seven or eight years at Liverpool and want to get three or four ahead of them, with a couple more European Cups.
