DUFF RESIGNS AFTER BLASTING HIS PLAYERS

IT IS believed that a dozen or so words were all it took for Damien Duff to deliver the seismic news of his departure from Shelbourne to his shell-shocked players.

According to sources, the titlewinning manager brought the curtain down on his three-and-ahalf-year reign by telling the squad that he had taken them as far as he could, and that he was done.

In the wake of Friday's defeat to Derry City, a result that saw them slip 15 points behind leaders Shamrock Rovers, Duff had a lot more to say.

He blasted his players and claimed that "pub teams" would have more motivation and energy than they showed in that Tolka Park reversal.

Although that result has left them only four points behind secondplaced Drogheda United, Duff was scathing in his criticism and questioned whether he would get a reaction in Waterford.

Now it will be down to his number two Joey O'Brien to get a performance out of a stunned squad.

The club confirmed Duff's departure in a lengthy statement, which read: "Shelbourne FC regretfully wishes to announce the departure of Damien Duff as first team manager.

"Damien informed the club this morning that, after much thought, he has made the decision to resign.

He shared the news with the players earlier today.

"While all at Shelbourne FC are deeply saddened by Damien's decision, we fully respect he feels this is the right choice for him at this time.

"During his four extraordinary years at Tolka Park, Damien transformed Shelbourne Football Club both on and off the pitch." It continued: "The club wishes Damien and his family every happiness and success in the future. His impact on Shelbourne FC was transformational ....
