Hundreds gather at Newgrange to mark solstice phenomenon

- BY RUAIRI SCOTT BYRNE

HUNDREDS of visitors gathered at the ancient passage tomb at Newgrange, Co Meath, in the early hours of yesterday morning to celebrate the Winter Solstice.

The Winter Solstice marks the shortest day and longest night of the year in the northern hemisphere.

The Newgrange Winter Solstice is a phenomenon, as the prehistoric passage tomb experiences a breathtaking alignment as the sun rises on the morning of December 21.

Every year, visitors from around the world gather to experience the breathtaking moment when the sun rises and illuminates the inner chamber of this prehistoric monument.
