But his affectionate side began to show when a head-over-heels Ryan met former Rose of Tralee winner Clare while Ryan interviewed her on his RTE Radio 1 show in March 2023.
She appeared as a guest on the show just days before he announced he was stepping down from the Late Late Show after 14 years at the helm of the biggest talk show in Ireland.
Finally, after months of speculation, Ryan and Clare stepped out hand in hand when they walked the red carpet in November 2023 at the Irish Post Awards in London.
