Depay overcame nightmare spell at United to rise above Dutch legends as his country's top goalscorer

- BY KEITH WEBSTER

WHATEVER else happened during his time at Manchester United, Memphis Depay was not short on confidence.

From the moment fellow Dutchman, Louis van Gaal, decided in 2015 that the 21-year-old was worth £25million of United's money, Memphis sounded as though he intended to live up to the price tag and the hype that followed.

"I am very hungry," he said on arrival in England. "I want to be a legend at one time in history."

It was not quite Jose Mourinho's "I am a special one" introduction but for one so young - whose four seasons at PSV Eindhoven had produced 49 goals in 124 games - it was certainly a bold statement.

And when he doubled down on his desired shirt number, eyebrows were raised.

Angel Di Maria was on the verge of leaving Old Trafford but before he had even departed, Memphis requested he take the iconic No.7 shirt off his hands.

The number worn by Best, Cantona, Beckham, Ronaldo. Those who don't need first names at the Theatre of Dreams.
