MALICK THIAW says the love he is getting from the Geordie public helped him shackle Erling Haaland in the crucial victory over Manchester City.

- BY LEE RYDER

Thiaw had Haaland in his back pocket in the 2-1 win, but is now tasked with stopping the likes of Mason Greenwood and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang when Newcastle face Marseille in the Champions League tonight.

“I was really happy with the performance from the team,” Thiaw said. “We took a lot of emotional stuff from the game, and we must show that in Marseille.

“In general, I am a really confident player. But when you do well against maybe the best striker in football right now, it can give you extra motivation and confidence.”
