OPW is called out in Dail over rentals
Irish Daily Mirror
|January 16, 2026
THE OPW has been called on to end a “nod-and-a-wink" practice of renting homes in Dublin's Phoenix Park to civil servants for little rent.
It has emerged that former and current civil servants renting properties owned by the Office of Public Works (OPW) in the sought-after area are paying between €670 and €4,160 a year.
The Dail Public Accounts Committee heard yesterday the OPW owns 55 properties in the Phoenix Park, and that half of them are vacant.
Sinn Fein TD Joanna Byrne said there was a reluctance from the OPW to provide exact details on the rents, which “flies in the face of the reality of what people are living in the depths of the property crisis”.

Expect a rule of Laur
NEWSBOY'S ITV SELECTIONS POET LAUREATE gets the vote to make the most of the weight he receives from rivals in the Fitzdares Sovereign Handicap Hurdle (3.35) at Windsor. The form of his two-and-three-quarter-length defeat of Phoenix Risen at Wincanton nine days before Christmas needs improving on, but the Chris Gordon trainee has plenty more to come. Nemean Lion defends his title in the Weatherbys Cheltenham Festival Betting Guide Hurdle (3.00), but preference is for ALTOBELLI, for whom conditions are tailor made. LARGY FORCE is also at her best when the mud is flying, and a 2lb rise for a score at Uttoxeter may not be enough to prevent the follow-up in the Fitzdares Mares' Handicap Chase (2.25). He'll go off at cramped odds for the Grade 2 Fitzdares Your Personal Bookmaker Lightning Novices' Chase (1.50) but BE AWARE should make no mistake.
