IRELAND rugby legend Conor Murray has revealed the “shocking” extent of his father Gerry's injuries when he was hit by a truck.

- BY MICHAEL SCULLY

Keen cyclist Gerry was on a bike close to the family's home in Patrickswell, Co Limerick, when a driver pulling a slurry tanker failed to stop and collided side-on with him in February 2023.

Conor writes in his autobiography Cloud Nine: My Life In Rugby: “The impact was shocking. He was driven backwards onto the road.

“His back, and the back of his head in particular, took the impact of the tarmac.

“His feet were still clipped into the pedals. He blacked out instantly.

“The bike's titanium frame was cracked and his helmet was smashed.

“It absorbed a great deal of the force. The helmet probably saved his life.

“Scans confirmed what doctors already suspected - he had a serious brain injury.”

Having started in the first Six Nations game of the 2023 championship days earlier, the scrumhalf was told by boss Andy Farrell to get to the hospital.
