Drugs in lakes and rivers turbocharge young fish

SALMON are being driven wild by cocaine entering their natural environment, say scientists.

Juvenile Atlantic salmon swam farther and dispersed more widely after being exposed to the drugs.

The study is the first to show the effects of cocaine on fish behaviour in the wild rather than in lab conditions.

Dr Marcus Michelangeli says the findings are important because movement plays a central role in how animals interact with their environment.
