Why South Mumbai is recording heavier showers this monsoon season

Since the onset of the southwest monsoon on May 26-its earliest in the past 75 years-Mumbai's island city division has been experiencing very heavy spells of rainfall, even as its suburban district has remained relatively drier.

In May, the coastal observatory in Colaba recorded 504 mm of rainfall-making it the station's wettest May in over a century since 1918. Yet again, on June 19, it was the island city division that received record-breaking rain, with the Colaba station clocking in 146 mm within 24 hours, its highest 24-hour rainfall in June since 2023 and second highest in the last seven years. Overall, since May, the Colaba station in the island city has recorded 981 mm of rainfall until Sunday, while the Santacruz observatory has received only 803 mm of rainfall. This is in stark contrast to the average monsoon patterns, during which the Santacruz station in the suburbs registers more wet spells.
