Surprising find of jaw-dropping art

A COLLECTION of 20th century paintings and sculptures from a small Yorkshire bungalow achieved lover £50,000 when it went under the hammer in the first Modern Art Sale at the Duggleby Stephenson auction centre in York.

Pre-sale estimates were left in the dust as national and international collectors piled into bidding for paintings by key figures in the Bloomsbury Group and works by renowned modern Chinese artists.

The collection came to light earlier this year when Duggleby art specialist Coralie Thomson was invited to make a routine house call.

She said: “A lady asked if we would take a look at some pictures and sculptures her late husband had inherited from his father many years ago. She told us she wasn't a collector and knew very little about them.
