The poetry-writing detective chief inspector has been played several times on TV. Roy Marsden, above, first took on the role in 1983 and has been followed by Martin Shaw and Bertie Carvel.

Pipe dreams: British actor Rupert Davies became famous for his portrayal of pipe-smoking Maigret in the long-running BBC series. The French detective was created by Belgium novelist Georges Simenon. He wrote 84 Maigret works during his lifetime and could produce a novel in around 10 days.
