Nominations open for 3 RS seats from Delhi

The Election Commission announced on Tuesday the schedule for legislators to elect three Rajya Sabha members from Delhi, setting the polling date for January 19.

The city's three Rajya Sabha seats are currently held by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) - Sanjay Singh, Sushil Kumar Gupta, and Narain Dass Gupta - with their six-year terms ending on January 27. Of these, Singh is currently in jail on charges of money laundering.

While the AAP has yet to announce its candidates, party leaders speculate that some of the sitting MPs could be re-nominated, people familiar with the matter said on Tuesday. The AAP's nominees will be elected unopposed because the party enjoys a majority in the Delhi Assembly.

A spokesperson for the AAP did not respond to requests for comment. The Election Commission's notification said January 9 will be the last date for filing nominations, and the scrutiny of papers will be done on January 10. The last day for the withdrawal of candidatures will be January 12, and polling will take place on January 19 between 9am and 4pm, according to the EC notification.
