'Mockery of democracy': Oppn slams bill on EC appointments

The Opposition on Tuesday attacked the government in the Rajya Sabha for bringing a bill that it said would compromise the functioning of the Election Commission of India (ECI), pave the way for the appointment of yes-men as the country's topmost election officials and bulldoze the independence of the commission.

The Opposition flagged its concerns during a discussion on the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Bill, 2023, which was passed by the Rajya Sabha by voice vote. The Opposition also argued that the bill was against the Supreme Court's March direction that a panel consisting of the Prime Minister, Chief Justice of India (CJI) and the leader of the Opposition should select the three top officials. The bill has replaced the CJI in the selection
