PLEA CHALLENGED THE SHARIAT’S INHERITANCE AND TESTAMENTARY SUCCESSION RULES FOR WOMEN
The Supreme Court on Thursday said that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) has nothing to do with any religion but is an ambition of our Constitution as it set out to examine a petition that challenged the Muslim personal law which discriminates against women in matters of inheritance and succession.
The observations came as the court heard a petition filed by advocate Poulomi Pavani Shukla and a Lucknow-based nonprofit organisation Nyaya Naari Foundation challenging the Shariat inheritance and testamentary succession applicable to women under the Muslim Personal Law (Shariat) Application Act, 1937.
