Delhi riots case: SC begins final hearing on bail pleas

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday began final hearing on the bail pleas of student activists Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam and Gulfisha Fatima in the 2020 northeast Delhi riots conspiracy case, with the accused contesting Delhi Police's claim that they delayed the trial.
Senior advocates Kapil Sibal, Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Siddharth Dave, representing the three respectively, argued that the prosecution took more than three years to complete the investigation, filing four supplementary charge sheets until June 2023, while the special prosecutor alone sought adjournments on 59 dates. The bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and NV Anjaria will resume the hearing on November 3.
