Census needs teachers, but schools even more
Hindustan Times Ranchi
|November 01, 2025
India's population census will finally be held in 2027 - six years too late.
The mammoth exercise will require an army of temporary staff - officers, enumerators, supervisors. Once again, the government's go-to workforce will be schoolteachers.
Under Section 27 of the Right to Education Act, 2009, teachers can be deployed for "nonacademic" purposes, but only for elections, census, and disaster relief. The law was meant to be narrow. In practice, it has become a catchall excuse to saddle teachers with administrative chores. The result is that teachers (overworked and, often, underpaid) are being forced to do the State's paperwork at the expense of their students' right to learn.

In Sivakumar’s story, the best and worst of India
\"I come from a very simple, humble background.\" K Sivakumar's every sentence was punctuated by inconsolable tears. \"Please forgive me if I get emotional.\" I had reached out to the former CFO of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) after being moved like hundreds of thousands of other Indians on reading his now viral Linkedin post.

Doesn't everything taste better when you are on the road? Every time I come back from a trip, I spend a few days caressing my memories. Because I eat for a living, many of the memories are about food.

Watch your steppe
For Kazakhstan, don't listen to the influencers. They tend to be young, penniless students, enjoying the rupee's advantage over the tenge and India's visa-free status. (And the fact that a direct flight to Almaty, the biggest city, is barely three hours from Delhi)
