Chandni Chowk Set for a 'Modern' Makeover

Public Works Department (PWD) minister Parvesh Verma on Friday met representatives of Chandni Chowk's local trader associations to discuss a comprehensive overhaul of the historic Old Delhi market.
NEW DELHI: The meeting marks the first formal step towards restoring the area's deteriorating infrastructure and transforming it into a "modern model marketplace."
Officials said that the Shahjahanabad Redevelopment Corporation (SRDC), the agency originally formed for the area's development, is also likely to be revived with a new board. The move aligns with a key promise in the BJP's election manifesto and is expected to be backed with a ₹100 crore budget.
"Several demands of the traders were discussed, and we have decided to immediately take up repair and maintenance work. Simultaneously, a broader redevelopment plan will be drawn up," a senior PWD official said.
