New NH roads to come up in state soon, says RCD minister

PATNA: Road construction department (RCD) minister Nitin Nabin on Wednesday told the state assembly that the state government had requested the Centre for extending the length of national highways in the state, adding that the process for identifying roads as national highways was going on.

In a reply to a short notice question of BJP's Arun Shankar Prasad, the minister said that the state had witnessed an increase in road length and number of national highways in past two decades by highlighting that the road length of two lane and four lane NH roads had increased substantially. "The length of national highway in the state is 6,000 km," the minister said.

The minister also said the length of national highways per lakh population is 4.5 km, compared to the national average of 10.90 km. Meanwhile, the average road length of national highways per 1,000 square km stands at 63.24 km, exceeding the national average of 39.90 km per 1,000 square km. He stressed that the state has made significant progress in expanding its national highway network over the years.
