Govt sets up cell to monitor safety of blood transfusions

The Delhi government's drugs control department has established a dedicated “blood cell” to ensure the safety of blood transfusions across the city’s blood banks. Officials said the new joint inspection unit—set up last month in coordination with the Centre—is tasked with monitoring all stages of blood collection, screening, and component separation, including plasma donation.

‘According to officials, the city has 82 registered blood banks. These include ll in central government-run hospitals, 1] in Delhi government hospitals, three at MCD hospitals, 14 operated by societies and NGOs, and 43 in private hospitals.

“A special inspection team has been constituted to oversee safety standards at all blood banks,” a senior drugs control department official said. “They will ensure proper testing is being conducted on donated blood to prevent risks to recipients.”
