DMRC engineer, wife, daughter killed in fire

A 45-year-old Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) engineer, his wife and their nine-year-old daughter were killed in a fire that broke out at their government accommodation in north Delhi's Mukundpur in the early hours of Tuesday, police said, adding that the blaze is suspected to have been triggered by a room heater explosion.

Though the fire was detected almost immediately and brought under control using the society's in-house firefighting system even before fire tenders arrived, the family could not be saved, as police suspect they fell unconscious due to smoke inhalation while asleep and later died in the blaze.

The deceased were identified as Ajay Vimal, an assistant section engineer with DMRC who joined the organisation in 2006, his wife Neelam Vimal (43) and their daughter Anvi (10). The family had been living in the flat since 2016.

Police said the incident was reported around 2.39am from the fifth-floor flat in Metro Apartments, a residential colony for DMRC employees located opposite Majlis Park Metro station. A PCR call regarding the fire was received at Adarsh Nagar police station.
