2020 Riots Case: City Court Asks Police to Probe Mishra's Role

A Delhi court on Tuesday ordered the Delhi Police to conduct further investigation against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Delhi law minister Kapil Mishra over his alleged involvement in an incident during the 2020 North-East Delhi riots, observing that a cognizable offence has been made out in the complaint filed by a Yamuna Vihar resident.

The incident had occurred on February 23, 2020, wherein Mishra and his associates had allegedly blocked a road in Kardampuri and destroyed street vendors' carts. The complainant claimed that, while Mishra was allegedly blocking the road, the then deputy commissioner of police (DCP) for northeast Delhi, along with other officers, stood by his side, warning protesters to disperse or face consequences.
In his ruling, additional chief judicial magistrate Vaibhav Chaurasia at Rouse Avenue courts highlighted Mishra's own admissions during police questioning, which confirmed his presence in the area and his involvement in trying to vacate the protest site. Mishra reportedly admitted that he had given an "ultimatum" to the DCP to clear the protest site.
