The National Environmental Engineering Institute (NEERI) has been appointed to evaluate the environmental impact of the Vadhavan port project developed in Palghar district, Maharashtra, officials said Thursday. The appointment was done as per the Supreme Court's directions, an official statement said.

The Supreme Court had on July 28 this year asked the authorities to consider appointing an expert body to study the impact on the environment due to the impending development of the Vadhavan port in Maharashtra.

The Vadhavan Port Project (VPP), a joint venture between the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) and the Maharashtra Maritime Board, received approval from the competent authority to engage NEERI, it said.
